And also, everytime someone visits your website (wether or not they have a facebook account), Facebook gets notified, because you load the like-button from their site. So even if people don't press the button, Facebook can still track their surfing habbits, site-by-site.

Who needs privacy anyway eh?

As an online marketer I like the FaceBook like button and the share button almost equally.

If you are adding good, valuable content to your blog, website or facebook page and you have the like or share button available to folks, a percentage are going to press on or the other and your message gets out a little bit further.

If you consistently add salesy stuff or end up spamming it wont matter whether you have a like or share button cos no one will care.

@ zedia.net
You said "you actually got it wrong, clicking on the like button will post something on your wall. Your friends will see it but it won’t appear in your stream when you (yourself not your friends) look at it. You have to go in your profile and under recent activities you will see your likes."

That is right on the money, it just lets your friends see what your into.

@ Ken G Ya , well as it seems with a lot of things concerning Facebook it cannot be trusted that much. I had 20 likes and multiple comments but they all got removed... I like the like button a bit less.

I put the likes button on our Vietri website www.vietri.com and after getting up to 86 likes the next day it was at 27 likes any reason this would happen? Thanks for your help.

OK, I see what you're saying now. At first I didn't find what you're talking about because it's rather small and actually wasn't even at the top of my wall - there were five things I shared over the past week that were higher (and much bigger) than Recent Activity. Also liking just gets a quick one-liner, no thumbnail image or excerpt or avatar or date...

It does get two textual links though, one to the page itself and one to the site's main URL. Two links is better than one, though the links are small and unbolded.

Anyway, I asked a friend of mine to view my wall after liking this page and it appeared to him the exact same way it did to me. So all in all, I still don't like "like" as much as "share", and will definitely be sticking with share, at least for the time being... Sharing seems to make a bigger and better presentation of your content and I think more likely for others to find and click and visit your highlighted page.

Thank you for the post and comment which helped me learn about this possible option.

PS - It may be possible I don't fully appreciate what a one-click Like (without sharing) will do for your page, except keep track locally of its favor. But that wouldn't help in link-building or traffic, if I've got it right.

I'm trying out the "Like" button now (instead of the Share button which I've used for a while)...

Regrettably I have to say, I don't like it. Unless I'm missing something, just one-click liking will not share or post the page's link to your Facebook wall. You have to also add a comment and then click again, so you actually have to click twice plus think of some new text to accompany it.

With sharing you just click twice and then you're done. Yes, there's a heavier pop-up window, but less thought and less friction.

So unless there's something I'm missing, I don't like the current implementation of "Like" and will stick with "Share." It's too bad because they could have done it better.
